We, 11 June 03 - "Birders: Spent the morning with Gary File, exploring the Trail of 100 Giants, in Tulare County. This area is about 2 hours northeast of Bakersfield, 1 hour north of Kernville (Lake Isabella). The feature bird is probably the Pileated Woodpecker, which can be heard drumming and calling much more easily than it can be seen. It is also one of the rare spots in the US where the Hermit Warbler is a 'trash bird.' Other warbler species seen this morning were Yellow, Yellow-rumped, and MacGillivray's Warbler. White-headed Woodpeckers and Red-breasted Sapsuckers were common. A single Townsend's Solitaire popped up in one of the meadows along the road. 'Large-billed' Fox Sparrows greeted us at most stops and Golden-crowned Kinglets were the 'most common bird you'll never see' (quote MOC). We saw two and heard many. It is an intriguing area, well worth a trip by kerncobirders. Michael McQuerrey, moderator, kerncobirding." GAFI, MIMC.
