Mo, Jul 31 - The grapes hanging from the arbor bordering the courtyard at Kern River Preserve Headquarters has become attractive for feeding birds including Summer Tanagers. As fall migration progresses several species including numerous individual Western Tanagers will take advantage of this food source. BB.

Mo, Jul 31 -  One Calliope, twenty-five Rufous, and three Allen's Hummingbirds were banded  in a meadow of red Penstemon located 2.1 miles along the dirt road leading north from Hwy. 155 at Greenhorn Summit, Kern County. DMi, PM.

Mo, Jul 31 - Seven Anna's, seven Black-chinned, one Costa's, and thirteen  Rufous Hummingbirds were banded at the Southern Sierra Research Station  (AKA Kern River Research Center) on Fay Ranch Road. DMi.

Mo, Jul 31 - Kern River Preserve Headquarters yard birds for this day/date  included:  Turkey Vulture, Red-shouldered Hawk, Mourning Dove, Yellow-billed Cuckoo (7:40pm) Black-chinned Hummingbird, Anna's Hummingbird, Rufous Hummingbird, Nuttall's Woodpecker, Downy Woodpecker, Hairy Woodpecker, Northern Flicker, Black PhoebeWestern Wood-Pewee, Willow Flycatcher, Common Raven, American Robin, Yellow Warbler, Common Yellowthroat, Summer Tanager,  Song Sparrow, Hooded Oriole, Bullock's Oriole, and House Finch BB.

Su, Jul 30 - Twenty Black-chinned, twelve Anna's,, seven Rufous, and one Allen's Hummingbird were banded and one Costa's Hummingbird was seen at Kern River Preserve Headquarters. DMi, PM, BB.

Su, Jul 30 - A Brown-crested Flycatcher was observed feeding a much smaller bodied and billed Ash-throated Flycatcher at the 156-acre Kelso Creek Sanctuary. Also present were a migrating Black-throated Gray Warbler, a pair of Western Tanagers, and a Black-headed Grosbeak. BB, et. al.

Su, Jul 30 - Kern River Preserve Headquarters yard birds for this day/date  included:  Costa's Hummingbird, Allen's Hummingbird,  Ash-throated Flycatcher, White-breasted Nuthatch, House Wren, Black-headed Grosbeak, Red-winged Blackbird,  Brewer's Blackbird, and Lesser Goldfinch. BB.

Sa, Jul 29 - Three Black-chinned, seven Anna's, one Costa's, and ten Rufous Hummingbirds were banded at the Southern Sierra Research Station (AKA Kern River Research Center). DMi, PM.

Sa, Jul 29 - Kern River Preserve Headquarters yard birds for this day/date  included: Lark Sparrow. BB.

Fr, Jul 28 - Species caught in the mist nets at the M.A.P.S. bird banding station along the Kern River Preserve's main nature trail: Nuttall's Woodpecker, Bewick's Wren, Yellow Warbler, Common Yellowthroat, Yellow-breasted Chat, Summer Tanager (female), Spotted Towhee, California Towhee, and Song Sparrow.  Species observed by banders at the M.A.P.S. station but not mist-netted included: Turkey Vulture, Red-shouldered Hawk, Red-tailed Hawk, Mourning Dove, Yellow-billed Cuckoo Anna's Hummingbird, Rufous Hummingbird, Northern Flicker, Downy Woodpecker, Black PhoebeWestern Wood-Pewee, Common Raven, Oak Titmouse, Bushtit, House Wren, Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, American Robin, Black-headed Grosbeak, Blue Grosbeak, Red-winged Blackbird, House Finch, and Lesser Goldfinch. Th, Jul 27 - One to two dozen male Tricolored Blackbirds were observed along Hwy. 178 between the entrance to the Kern River Preserve on the east and Sierra Way on the west. A half dozen males were observed along the Isabella Reservoir southeast corner shoreline accessed off Hwy. 178  just west of the gravel plant in South Lake. Also present were two Black-bellied Plovers still mostly in nesting season plumage. BB, JB.

Th, Jul 27 - Twenty Rufous and three Allen's Hummingbirds were banded  in a meadow of red Penstemon located 2.1 miles along the dirt road leading north from Hwy. 155 at Greenhorn Summit, Kern County. DMi, PM.

Tu, Jul 25 - Five species of hummingbirds were observed at the Southern Sierra Research Station on Fay Ranch Road: Black-chinned (several ), Anna's (several), Costa's (a handful), Calliope (one), and Rufous (several, but not as numerous as Black-chinned and Anna's). DMi.

Tu, Jul 25 - Kern River Preserve Headquarters yard birds for this day/date  included: Great Blue Heron, Tree Swallow, Bushtit, and Bewick's Wren.

Su, Jul 23 - Ten Black-chinned, twenty-one Anna's, and four Rufous Hummingbirds were banded at Kern River Preserve Headquarters. DMi, PM.

Su, Jul 23 - Kern River Preserve Headquarters yard birds for this day/date  included:  Hairy Woodpecker and Western Bluebird.  BB.

Su, Jul 23 - Two Brown-crested Flycatchers were found at the west end of Prince's Pond, Kern River Preserve. PM.

Sa, Jul 22 - A Lawrence's Goldfinch was found in the yard at Kern River Preserve Headquarters. Numbers of this common to abundant nesting species are dropping sharply as summer passes. In the summer of 1999, no Lawrence's Goldfinches were reported from anywhere in the Kern River watershed the entire month of August. BB.

Fr, Jul 21 - A male Rose-breasted Grosbeak was found at the west end of Prince's Pond, Kern River Preserve. JK.

Th, Jul 20 - Fifteen Calliope, three Anna's, and three Rufous Hummingbirds were banded at Blackrock Ranger Station just off the Sherman Pass Road, Sequoia National Forest, Tulare County. DMi, PM.

Mo, Jul 17 - A Common Poorwill was observed at 8:45pm on the entrance driveway of the Kern River Preserve. BB.

Mo, Jul 17 - A "kalping" and "cooing" Yellow-billed Cuckoo was heard from the yard of Kern River Preserve Headquarters at 6:30am, 9am, and from 10:55am-11:30am. BB.

Su, Jul 16 - A Northern Parula and three Grasshopper Sparrows were observed at the Cane Brake Ecological Reserve. DLa, BG, et. al.

Su, Jul 16 - A male Indigo Bunting was observed to the south from the end of the Ranch Road leading west from Kern River Preserve Headquarters. PM.

Su, Jul 16 - A female Blue Grouse with three young was observed along the 500m/yd long trail leading from the parking lot to the lookout tower on 9400' Bald Mountain, Tulare County. A flock of Mountain Quail and several Cassin's Finches were also observed at this location. BB, TCAS.

Su, Jul 16 - Dozens of Calliope Hummingbirds, in the company of a several  Anna's Hummingbirds and one or more Selasphorous hummingbirds, were feeding at two window-mount feeders at 8150' Blackrock Ranger Station, Sequoia National Forest, Tulare County. Several White-headed Woodpeckers and a very cooperative Green-tailed Towhee were also present. BB, TCAS.

Su, Jul 16 - A singing Plumbeous Vireo was observed at Troy Meadow Campground, Sequoia National Forest, Tulare County. Also present were a Red-breasted Sapsucker and two Clark's Nutcrackers, BB, TCAS.

Su, Jul 16 - A singing Plumbeous Vireos was observed at the entrance to BLM's Chimney Peak Campground, Tulare County. BB, TCAS.

Su, Jul 16 - Ten-fifteen  Mountain Quail  were observed from Chimney Peak Road, Kern County along the switchback section. BB, TCAS.

Sa, Jul 15 - Several White-headed Woodpeckers, two Winter Wrens, and a Hermit Warbler were observed along the Trail of 100 Giants, Giant Sequoia National Monument, Sequoia National Forest, Tulare County. BB, TCAS.

Su, Jul 9 - A Brown-crested Flycatcher, a Northern Parula, and Grasshopper Sparrows were observed at the Cane Brake Ecological Reserve. DC, WFO, et. al

Su, Jul 9 - Three Black Swifts were observed at a traditional location at Milepost 2.6, Tulare County, which is located 20-25 miles north of Kernville and across the Johnsondale Bridge over the North Fork Kern River BB, WFO, et. al.

Su, Jul 9 - Calling Brown-crested Flycatchers were observed at Audubon's 156-acre Kelso Creek Sanctuary alongside Kelso Valley Road near Milepost 15.30. MW, Sean Rowe, et. al.

Saturday, July 8, 2000 - South Fork Kern River Rapid Assessment Summer Bird Count,
5:30am-9:30am,NOTE: The 2000 results following do not contain the complete count from the Cane Brake Ecological Reserve. 
Coverage was about 4,000 acres of riparian habitat and associated
uplands along the lower 14 miles of the South Fork Kern River.

Sa, Jul 8 - Seven Yellow-billed Cuckoos, a Brown-crested Flycatcher, a singing Red-eyed Vireo, two Hutton's Vireos, a Swainson's Thrush, a Lucy's Warbler, seven Indigo Buntings, and a Brewer's Sparrow were reported from the South Fork Wildlife Area. GH, RH, JH, DS, DT, JW, DY, WFO, et. al.

Th, Jul 6 - Wood Duck, Wild Turkey, California Quail, Virginia Rail, Common Snipe, Yellow-billed Cuckoo (2), White-throated Swift, Black-chinned Hummingbird, Anna's Hummingbird, Costa's Hummingbird, Acorn Woodpecker, Nuttall's Woodpecker, Hairy Woodpecker, Western Wood-Pewee, Black Phoebe, Say's Phoebe, Ash-throated Flycatcher, Western Kingbird, Western Scrub-Jay, Oak Titmouse, Western Bluebird, Summer Tanager, Western Tanager, Spotted Towhee, California Towhee,  Rufous-crowned Sparrow, Brewer's Sparrow, Lark Sparrow, Savannah Sparrow, Blue Grosbeak, Lazuli Bunting, Indigo Bunting (2 males), Tricolored Blackbird, and Bullock's Oriole were among fifty-four species observed on a 6:15am-10:45am field trip at the 1200-acre Cane Brake Ecological Reserve just west of the settlement of Cane Brake, Kern County. We, Jul 5 - A family group of Williamson's Sapsuckers and a singing Townsend's Solitaire were observed at the entrance to Troy Meadow Campground, Sequoia National Forest, Tulare County. We, Jul 5 - A Red-eyed Vireo was observed along the entrance driveway to the Kern River Preserve. TC, GMc, WFO.

Sa, Jul 1 - The singing Northern Parula was still present in the vicinity of the west end of Prince's Pond, Kern River Preserve. PM.

Fr, Jun 30 - A singing Northern Parula was observed in the vicinity of Prince's Pond, Kern River Preserve,  along with three Yellow-billed Cuckoos. PM.

Fr, Jun 30 - A singing Northern Parula was observed on the Kern River Preserve off the south side of the South Fork Kern River, 0.5-0.75 miles upstream from the Sierra Way Bridge. PM.

Fr, Jun 30 - An immature Golden Eagle and a  flock of six Mountain Quail  were observed from Chimney Peak Road, Kern County along the switchback section. BB, LAAS.

Three singing Plumbeous Vireos, including one at a nest,  were observed at the entrance to BLM's Chimney Peak Campground, Tulare County. BB, LAAS.

Six Pinyon Jays were seen along Kennedy Meadows Road, Tulare County. BB, LAAS.

Two male Williamson's Sapsuckers, a Red-breasted Sapsucker, five+ Clark's Nutcrackers, one male Mountain Bluebird, a Townsend's Solitaire, Cassin's Finches, and five Red Crossbills were observed at Troy Meadow, Sequoia National Forest, Tulare County. BB, LAAS.

Dozens of Calliope Hummingbirds (no adult males) were coming to feeders at 8150' elevation Black Rock Ranger Station, Sequoia National Forest, Tulare County. BB, LAAS.

A booming Blue Grouse, two White-headed Woodpeckers, Olive-sided Flycatcher, several Clark's Nutcrackers, a singing Townsend's Solitaire, and Cassin's Finches were observed at Bald Mountain, Sequoia National Forest, Tulare County. BB, LAAS.

We, Jun 28 - A Cassin's Kingbird was observed at the corner of Isabel and Marcia in Weldon. SAL, PLW.

We, Jun 28 - A singing Bell's Vireo was observed along the trail leading west from the Kern River Preserve entrance driveway to the Meadow Field restoration site. MW. NOTE: This trail is accessed by permission only due to the presence of nesting pairs of the Federally Endangered Southwestern Willow Flycatchers.

Tu, Jun 27 - Three Yellow-billed Cuckoos were observed at Prince's Pond; one at the entrance gate just off Sierra Way and the other two in the deep woods west of the pond. Also found west of the pond in the deep woods were Brown-crested Flycatchers. PM.

Tu, Jun 27 - The male Indigo Bunting continued at Fay Ranch Road along with an adult male Summer Tanager. BB, GB, EK.

Tu, Jun 27 - The singing Red-eyed Vireo expanded its territory into the yard of Kern River Preserve Headquarters as well as the Jun 25 & 26 location. Also present were Willow Flycatchers and an immature male Summer Tanager. BB, GB, EK.

Tu, Jun 27 - A Brown-crested Flycatcher and an adult male Summer Tanager were found at the Cane Brake Ecological Reserve. Cassin's Kingbird and Lawrence's Goldfinch continued to be seen in Onyx. BB, GB, EK.

Su & Mo, Jun 25 & 26 - A persistently singing Red-eyed Vireo was heard, located, and seen along the entrance road to the Kern River Preserve. BB, MW, et. al. This is the fifth location for the 2000 nesting season (See Th, Jun 22, Th, Jun 22, Su, Jun 4, and Fr, May 19).

Sa & Su, Jun 24 & 25 - A "cueing" and "kalping" Yellow-billed Cuckoo continues to be present in the slough opposite the Birders' Board at Kern River Preserve Headquarters. Today's observation was c. 11am. Friday's was at 3pm. BB, JLo.

Sa & Su, Jun 24 & 25 - A singing male Indigo Bunting was found on both sides of Fay Ranch Road on the south side of the bridge over the South Fork Kern River. BB, DD, JLo, AS. Stay on the roadsides and DO NOT go over any fences as this is posted private land. Thank you. This is the fifth male this spring.

Sa., Jun 24 - Up to five Summer Tanagers continue to be seen and heard around Kern River Preserve Headquarters and along the Nature Trail. BB, et. al.

Th, Jun 22 - A singing Red-eyed Vireo, Northern Parula, singing Indigo Bunting, and singing Rose-breasted Grosbeak, were observed on the north side of the South Fork Wildlife Area west of the small parking lot off of Sierra Way about two miles north and west of Highway 178. JSt.

Th, Jun 22 - A Red-eyed Vireo was observed foraging at the SW corner of the Palmer Forest on the north side of the Kern River Preserve between Fay Ranch Road and Sierra Way. PLW.

We, Jun 21 - Four species of hummingbirds (Anna's, Black-chinned, Costa's, and Rufous) were banded at a private residence off Fay Ranch Road at the base of Fay Canyon. DMi, PM.

We, Jun 21 - A female Indigo Bunting was found paired up with the male Indigo Bunting at the Cane Brake Ecological Reserve. JSt.

Mo, Jun 19 - An adult singing male Indigo Bunting was observed at the Cane Brake Ecological Reserve near the footbridge. This is the fourth male this spring. Three Brown-crested Flycatchers were also observed on the Cane Brake Ecological Reserve. TB, JSt. 

Mo, Jun 19 - An adult male Rufous Hummingbird was observed at a feeder at a private residence off Fay Ranch Road at the base of Fay Canyon. This is a very early fall date for this species. DMi, PM.

Su, Jun 18 - An adult male Summer Tanager was observed along the Kern River Preserve Nature Trail about 100 yd/m northeast of the Visitor Center at 10am.. BB, et. al.

Su, Jun 18 - A calling Yellow-billed Cuckoo was observed along the Kern River Preserve Nature Trail about 100 yds./m northeast of the Visitor Center at 5:20am and 11am. BB, RT, et. al.

Su, Jun 18 - The singing male Indigo Bunting was still present on the Meadow Field Restoration Site (See May 28). BB, et. al.

Sa, Jun 17 - Several Lawrence's Goldfinches were still present along the ranch road leading west from Kern River Preserve Headquarters. BB, et. al.

Tu, Jun 13 - A male Indigo Bunting was located on the north side of the South Fork Wildlife Area just east of Isabella Reservoir. This bird was accessed from the SFWA parking lot found off the left side of Sierra Way about two miles north and west of Hwy. 178. MW. Note: This is the third male to be found on territory this spring on the Kern River Preserve and South Fork Wildlife Area. Six Indigo Buntings were counted on the morning of July 10, 1999 in the area of newest growth cottonwoods and willows from this SFWA north side parking area west to the shore of the reservoir. A thorough walk of this several hundred acre area may yield several individual Indigo Buntings.

Mo, Jun 12 - A Yellow-billed Cuckoo was heard on the north side of the main forest of the Kern River Preserve mid-way between the Fay Ranch Rd. and Sierra Way bridges over the South fork Kern River. AW, JoW. Some other species observed along the 1.25 miles of riverbed above the Sierra Way Bridge were: Willow Flycatcher 6, Warbling Vireo 3, Yellow Warbler 20-30, Yellow-breasted Chat 7, Summer Tanager 2 adult males, Lazuli Bunting 20-30, and Lawrence's Goldfinch 50-60. Su, Jun 11 - Three Yellow-billed Cuckoos were observed on the Kern River Preserve; one west of Prince's Pond (EC), one at Headquarters (PM, AW), and one on the South Fork Kern River at Nature Trail signpost #16 (Ruth ?).

Su, Jun 11 - Red-breasted Sapsucker, White-headed Woodpecker, Hammond's Flycatcher, Cassin's Vireo, Winter Wren, and Hermit Warbler were among those species observed at Redwood Meadow and along the Trail of 100 Giants, Western Divide Hwy., Sequoia National Forest, Tulare County. BB, AW, et. al.

Su, Jun 11 - A Brown-crested Flycatcher was observed from the junction of Hwy. 178 and the entrance to the Cane Brake Ecological Reserve. A Prairie Falcon, a dozen White-throated Swifts, and an adult male Summer Tanager was also present. BB, AW.

Su, Jun 11 - The Cassin's Kingbird pair was still at the nest site in Onyx (See Apr 1). BB, et. al.

Su, Jun 11 - Two male Northern Parulas, a Black-and-white Warbler, and three Summer Tanagers  were observed in the main riverside forest of the Kern River Preserve halfway between the Fay Ranch Road bridge and Sierra Way bridge over the South Fork Kern River. PM.

Su, Jun 11 - A male Indigo Bunting was heard and seen at the west end of Prince's Pond on the Kern River Preserve. This is the second territorial male found this spring on the Kern River Preserve. Also present were a White-tailed Kite, Willow Flycatchers, Tricolored Blackbirds, and Lawrence's Goldfinches.. BB, et. al.

Su, Jun 11- A Ladder-backed Woodpecker, several singing Black-chinned Sparrows, and a singing Scott's Oriole were observed at Milepost 74 on Hwy. 178. BB, et. al.

Su, Jun 11 - Two adult male Scott's Orioles and several Black-throated Sparrows were present along the lower two miles of the Chimney Peak Road National Backcountry By-way just off Hwy, 178. BB, et. al,

Sa, Jun 10 - A Yellow-billed Cuckoo was observed at the Kern River Preserve in the main forest upriver from the Sierra Way Bridge. PM.

Sa, Jun 10 - A Black-and-white Warbler was heard between signposts 7 & 9 on the Nature Trail of the Kern River Preserve. BB, et. al.

Sa, Jun 10 - Five Summer Tanagers (one female, four adult males) were observed between 10am & Noon along the Nature Trail of the Kern River Preserve. BB, et. al. 

Sa, Jun 10 - A visit to Landers Meadow in the Piute Mountains of Sequoia National Forest produced, among others, White-headed Woodpecker, Pinyon Jay, Violet- green Swallow, Pygmy Nuthatch, Brewer's Sparrow, Green-tailed Towhee, & Cassin's Finch.. BB, et. al.

Fr, Jun 9 - A Prairie Falcon was observed flying over Scodie Park, Onyx and a family group of Hooded Orioles were in the park.. BB, et. al.

Fr, Jun 9 - A Yellow-billed Cuckoo was observed in the vicinity of signpost #13 along the Nature Trail of the Kern River Preserve. First report of the year.

Fr, Jun 9 - Five Southwestern Willow Flycatchers (extimus) were heard or seen along the entrance driveway & along the road leading west from Kern River Preserve Headquarters. Also observed on this walk were Yellow-breasted Chat, Lazuli Bunting, Blue Grosbeak, Tricolored Blackbird, & Lawrence's Goldfinch. BB, AW.

Fr, Jun 9 - A male Vermilion Flycatcher was observed flying over the restoration site at the Cane Brake Ecological Reserve (AKA Bloomfield Ranch). JSt.

Fr, Jun 9 - At least four Plumbeous Vireos were heard and seen at Chimney Creek Campground (at the entrance and at campsites 20, 30, & 34) Also present at the campground were White-headed Woodpecker, Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, MacGillivray's Warbler, Western Tanager, & Black-headed Grosbeak. Fr, Jun 9 - Pinyon Jays were found at two locations along the Kennedy Meadows Road. Two were on the south side of the road just east of the Kennedy Meadows Store and up to thirty were along and on the road farther to the east Also observed along Kennedy Meadows Road were Violet-green Swallow, Mountain Bluebird, Townsend's Solitaire,  Brewer's Sparrow, Lark Sparrow, Green-tailed Towhee, & Red Crossbill. Fr, Jun 9 - A second year male Scott's Oriole was heard and seen along the Chimney Peak Road off Hwy. 178, Kern County,  just before starting to switchback up to the Tulare County line. BB, et. al.

Fr, Jun 9 - Six Red Crossbills were observed along Fish Creek at the lower end of the Troy Meadow Campground just below Troy Meadow , Sequoia National Forest. Also observed from this picnic spot next to Fish Creek were Calliope Hummingbird, Clark's Nutcracker, Mountain Chickadee, Pygmy Nuthatch, MacGillivray's Warbler, & Cassin's Finch.  BB, et. al.

Su, Jun 4 - A singing Red-eyed Vireo was observed about 150m/yd WSW of Kern River Preserve Headquarters on the south side of the Slough Channel forest. BB, et. al.

Su, Jun 4 - A singing adult male Summer Tanager was heard and seen from the Nature Trail 400m/yds east of Kern River Preserve Headquarters. A female and a second year male Summer Tanager were seen along the slough channel just west of the entrance driveway to Kern River Preserve Headquarters. BB, et. al.

Sa, Jun 3 - A singing Yellow-breasted Chat was observed on territory behind the large cottonwoods at the first sitting bench on the Nature Trail  about 350m east of Kern River Preserve Headquarters.
