Fr, 30 May 03 - The adult male Vermilion Flycatcher was still present. BUWI.

Th, 29 May 03 - An adult male and "female" plumaged Vermilion Flycatcher were observed at the 20 May location. BOBA.

Tu, 27 May 03 - A family group of three Vermilion Flycatchers were observed in the territory where an adult male of this species was first detected a week before (See Tu, 20 May 03). This is the first support for nesting in the South Fork Valley in nearly a decade. JOHA, LOHA.

Mo, 26 May 03 - Both a Kentucky Warbler (SUST) and a Mourning Warbler (????) were reported from the campus of Cerro Coso College in Ridgecrest in the area of the sculture garden & lawn and pine grove with the vinca ground cover. SUST.

Mo, 26 May 03 - At Butterbredt Spring today several rare to very rare warbler species were reported: Blue-winged Warbler (SCTE), Tennessee Warbler (SCTE), a male Northern Parula (SCTE), a female Northern Parula (JOWI), and a Blackburnian Warbler (MABR). A Bendire's Thrasher was also reported (SCTE).

Mo, 26 May 03 - FOS. Nine Black Swifts were observed among fifteen White-throated Swifts flying remarkably low at 7:30am this morrning in the vicinity of the area between the Kern Valley Golf Course and the community of Wofford Heights. ROBE, JACU.

Mo, 26 May 03 - Brown-crested Flycatchers have arrived in good numbers. They have been most consistently heard and seen from a traditional location at the far east end of the Kern River Preserve and at a new location along the first 500 meters/yards of the fence running east from the end of the Migrant Corner Trail. BOBA.

Mo, 26 May 03 - Summer Tanagers are present in large numbers and are being reported from all traditional locations - Audubon California's Kern River Preserve Headquarters and Nature Trail, Fay Ranch Road in the vicinity of the bridge over the South Fork Kern River, Prince's Pond/Sierra Way Bridge area, California Department of Fish & Game's Canebrake Ecological Reserve, all along the South Fork Kern River channel, and the Sequoia National Forest's South Fork Wildlife Area. Mo, 26 May 03 - A small Tricolored Blackbird colony appears to be being reestablished in a small patch of Himalayan blackberry 100 meters/yards off the north side of Hwy. 178 0.2 miles east of Sierra Way in Weldon. BOBA.

Sa, 24 May 03 - A Brown-crested Flycatcher was repeatedly very well heard and very well seen on a known territory at the far northeastern end of the Kern River Preserve. Also present in this location, among others, were: Wood Duck, Nuttall's Woodpecker, Western Wood-Pewee, Black Phoebe, Ash-throated Flycatcher, Warbling Vireo, Western Bluebird, Yellow Warbler, Spotted Towhee, Lark Sparrow, Savannah Sparrow, Blue Grosbeak, Lazuli Bunting, "Kern" Red-winged Blackbird, Western Meadowlark, Bullock's Oriole, and Lawrence's Goldfinch. Sa, 24 May 03 - A Virginia Rail was repeatedly giving the "ka-dick, ka-dick, ka-dick" call from the marsh at the end of Migrant Corner Trail. Also present in this area, among others, were:Wood Duck, Nuttall's Woodpecker, Western Wood-Pewee, Black Phoebe, Ash-throated Flycatcher, Rock Wren, Western Bluebird, Yellow Warbler, Summer Tanager, California Towhee, Lark Sparrow, Blue Grosbeak, Lazuli Bunting, "Kern" Red-winged Blackbird, Western Meadowlark, Bullock's Oriole, and Lawrence's Goldfinch.

Fr, 23 May 03 - A Lesser Nighthawk was reported to be flying over Kern River Preserve Headquarters this evening. RETO.

Fr, 23 May 03 - A singing Northern Parula was present in the yard at Kern River Preserve Headquarters from at least 5:45am-6:30am this morning. BOBA, MAWH.

Fr, 23 May 03 - Two-three Willow Flycatchers of the Federally Endangered Southwestern (extimus) subspecies were detected along the entrance drive of the Kern River Preserve. BOBA.

Th, 22 May 03 - A pair of Le Conte's Thrashers were observed from an SUV at the junction of Kelso Valley Road and Piute Mountain Road. BOBA, et. al.

Th, 22 May 03 - Several pairs of Pinyon Jays were encountered on traditional nesting grounds alongside Piute Mountain Road at Landers Meadow this aftternoon. BOBA, SUMI, BOST, et. al.

Th, 22 May 03 - Lawrence's Goldfinches continue to be reported in large numbers (40-60 individuals) during walks along the dirt road leading westward from the Kern River Preserve Headquarters parking lot. BOBA.

Tu, 20 May 03 - A singing male Vermilion Flycatcher was found, appropriately, by a visiting bird researcher from southeast Arizona in the trees around the wet meadow on the west side of Fay Ranch Road on the south side (Hwy. 178 side) of the bridge over the South Fork Kern River. This bird is on private property, but has beeen seen by numerous individuals from the road shoulder next to a pile of twenty+ discarded tires. Nesting of this species has not been conformed since the mid-1990s. GAMA.

Tu, 20 May 03 - A light-phased Swainson's Hawk was reported to be on the south side of the Spouth Fork Kern River riparian forest east of Fay Ranch Road. The date is late for the South Fork Valley. But, it is well within the 25 March to 10 June window of spring occurrence mentioned in M.T. Heindel's East Kern book. ASSU.

Su, 18 May 03 - A male Indigo Bunting was back on a traditional nesting season territory this morning. The location is on the Kern River Preserve at its far eastern end east of Fay Ranch Road along the north edge of the South Fork Kern River riparian forest. On numerous prior visits to this territory since the last ten days of April it has been solidly occupied by a male Lazuli bunting. True to form of other years, now that the Indigo Bunting has arrived, no male Lazuli Bunting is in that territory. BOBA.

Sa, 17 & 18 May 03 - Several hundred Western Tanagers were observed migrating north from along the Migrant Corner Trail each of these two mornings. Numerous and widespread Swaison's Thrushes were heard "plopping" from througout the South Fork Kern River riparian forest as well. BOBA.

Sa, 10 May 03 - A fly-over first year Bald Eagle was well-observed about 100 meters/yards east along the Nature Trail from the Kern River Preserve Visitor Center during a Tulare County Audubon Society field trip. The bird was flying east at about 300 feet elevation with "...great views by everyone." reported. GALU, MAOB. (NOTE: This is the second latest record for the Kern River Valley. BOBA.)

Sa, 10 May 03 - An FOS Willow Flycatcher was reported to be along the entrance driveway to Kern River Preserve Headquarters. Individuals of this species will arrive for nesting season through at least early June. MAWH.

Sa, 3 May 03 - Four species of Carduelis finches (Pine Siskin, Lesser Goldfinch, Lawrence's Goldfinch, and American Goldfinch) continue in the yard at KRP Headquarters. This phenomenon will likely end soon as the thistle feeders will be taken down as soon as the current supply of thistle seed runs out either Sunday, May 4th or Monday, May 5th. The Pine Siskins and American Goldfinches will likely move out of the valley while the Lesser and Lawrence's Goldfinches remain. BOBA.

Sa, 3 May 03 - Ladder-backed Woodpecker, Cactus Wren, and Black-throated Sparrow are being seen in the Joshua tree woodland and desert wash habitat where Kelso Creek crosses Kelso Valley Road about 5 miles south of Hwy. 178 in Weldon.

Sa, 3 May 03 - Large numbers of Western Grebes, Clark's Grebes, and American White Pelicans continue at the easy end of Isabella Reservoir. BOBA.

Fr, 2 May 03 - The first male Summer Tanager of the season to be seen at KRP Headquarters was observed. BOBA, GALU.

Th, 1 May 03 - Northern Goshawks were heard and seen at both Holey Meadow Campground and the Trail of 100 Giants along the Western Divide Highway north of Kernville. Also present were Blue Grouse (Holey Meadow) and Hermit Warblers (Trail of 100 Giants). ALSH, ROBU, et. al.

Th, 1 May 03 - Tillie Creek Campground, flanking Isabella Reservoir,s west shore in Wofford Heights, hosted an impressive suite of species of interest to those birders outside their range: California Quail, Acorn Woodpecker, Nutttall's Woodpecker, Western Scrub Jay, Oak Titmouse, Spotted Towhee, and California Towhee. Tu, 29 Apr 03 - A Lewis's Woodpecker and a pair of American Dippers were observed at Main Dam Campground below Isabella Reservoir. Canyon Wrens also frequent the rocks along the river at this location. TEGA, et. al.

Tu, 29 Apr 03 - A Tricolored Blackbird colony has formed in a Himalayan blackberry patch alongside Hwy. 178 about 0.1 miles east of Sierra Way. BOBA.

Tu, 29 Apr 03 - A pair of FOS KRP Brown-crested Flycatchers were heard and seen on the north side of the forest c. 300 meters/yards east of Migrant Corner. BOBA, et. al.

Tu, 29 Apr 03 - Hundreds (perhaps thousands) of Vaux's Swifts were observed swirling and migrating over KRP's Migrant Corner area and the entire South Fork Valley for that matter...an amazing phenomenon to witness. BOBA, et. al.

Mo, 28 Apr 03 - Two pairs of Pinyon Jays were observed carrying nesting material to large Jeffrey pines just off the south side of Piute Mountain Road at the edge of Landers Meadow. BOBA, BUWI, MAWI, et. al.

Mo, 28 Apr 03 - Several Blue Grosbeaks and Lazuli Buntings were observed from along Fay Ranch Road north of the bridge over the South Fork Kern River. BOBA, BUWI, MAWI, et. al.

Su, 27 Apr 03 - A Lewis's Woodpecker was observed on a telephone pole next to Live Oak Campground in Wofford Heights. BUWI, et. al.

Su, 27 Apr 03 - Several Band-tailed Pigeons, a Red-breasted Sapsucker, and a White-headed Woodpecker were observed behind the ranger station just south of Greenhorn Summit. BUWI, MAWI, BOBA, et. al.

Fr, 25 Apr - Su, 27 Apr - 219 bird species were reported for the 10th Annual Kern River Valley BioFest. Highlights: 1000+ White-faced Ibis, 18 waterfowl species, California Condor, Northern Goshawk, 4 falcon species, Blue Grouse, Mountain Quail, Solitary Sandpiper, Vaux's Swift numbers, five hummingbird species, Lewis's Woodpecker, Brown-crested Flycatcher, Pinyon Jay nesting, Bank Swallows, 12 warbler species, Black-and-white Warbler, Summer Tanager, Western Tanager numbers, Vesper Sparrow lingering, White-throated Sparrow, Harris's Sparrow, Yellow-headed Blackbird multiple sightings, and 4 Carduelis finches in one location. MAOB.

Fr. 25 Apr 03 - 187 bird species were reported for the 10th Annual Kern River Valley BioFest's Cooperative Big Day. MAOB.

Fr, 25 Apr 03 - An American Kestrel, Merlin, Peregrine Falcon, and Prairie Falcon were all seen along KRP's 0.5 mile long Migrant Corner Trail in about 90 minutes. This is the first time a falcon slam has been recorded in the Kern River Valley with the added bonus of being from a single, short trail in a small amount of time. A Hermit Warbler was also detected and seen during this walk. KEKA, et. al.

Fr, 25 Apr 03 - Several hundred Western Tanagers were observed migrating north out of the forest from along the Migrant Corner Trail during a three hours period this morning. BOBA, et. al.

Fr, 25 Apr 03 - 60-80 individuals each of Lesser Goldfinches and Lawrence's Goldfinches were observed feeding in fiddleneck alongside the dirt ranch road leading west from the KRP Headquarters parking lot. BOBA, et. al.

Fr, 25 Apr 03 - Five hummingbird species (Black-chinned, Anna's, Costa's, Calliope, and Rufous) were reported from the window mount feeders at Kern River Preserve Headquarters. KEKA, ALSH, et. al.

Fr, 11 Apr 03 - Two FOS migrant species Gray Flycatchers, a single unidentified Empidonax flycatcher, and two FOS migrant species Black-throated Gray Warblers were observed along KRP's Migrant Corner Trail this morning. Th, 10 Apr 03 - A FOS migrant species Cassin's Vireo was observed "singing" from the red willows near the east end of the Migrant Corner Trail. BOBA.

Th, 10 Apr 03 - A FOS migrant & nesting species Warbling Vireo was observed calling, singing, and foraging in the red willow on the edge of the marsh just beyond the end of the Migrant Corner Trail. BOBA.

Th, 10 Apr 03 - A FOS migrant species Nashville Warbler was observed foraging in a red willow at the east end of the Kern River Preserve's Migrant Corner Trail off Sierra Way in Weldon. BOBA.

Th, 10 Apr 03 - 7:30am-8:45am, Migrant Corner Trail - A small pulse of migrants was present: Cassin's Vireo 1, Warbling Vireo 1, Ruby-crowned Kinglet 6, Orange-crowned Warbler 1, Nashville Warbler 1, Yellow-rumped Warbler 1, Black-headed Grosbeak 3. Among other species observed: Wood Duck, California Quail, Nuttall's Woodpecker, Rock Wren, Western Bluebird, Spotted Towhee, California Towhee, Lesser Goldfinch, and Lawrence's Goldfinch. BOBA.

Su, 6 Apr 03 - 15 Lawrence's Goldfinch and 100+ Lesser Goldfinch were observed feeding in fiddleneck from along the dirt ranch road leading west from the Kern River Preserve Headquarters parking lot Weldon. BOST, SUST.

Sa, 5 Apr 03 - A FOS migrant species Bank Swallow was observed at the east end of the Kern River Preserve (guided access only) along with Tree Swallow, Violet-green Swallow, Northern Rough-winged Swallow, and Barn Swallow. ALSH, MIMC.

Sa, 5 Apr 03 - Ladder-backed Woodpecker (a pair), Cactus Wren, California Thrasher, Brewer's Sparrow, Black-throated Sparrow, and Scott's Oriole (male) were observed from the area around Kelso Creek (dry stream bed) five miles south on Kelso Valley Road from Hwy. 178 in Weldon.

Sa, 5 Apr 03 - FOS migrant & nesting species Pacific-slope Flycatcher was heard and seen along the Migrant Corner Trail. Among other species also present: Wood Duck, Prairie Falcon, California Quail, White-throated Swift, Anna's Hummingbird, Nuttall's Woodpecker, Black Phoebe, Western Kingbird, Tree Swallow, Violet-green Swallow, Northern Rough-winged Swallow, Cliff Swallow, Oak Titmouse, Bushtit, Rock Wren, Western Bluebird, Hermit Thrush, Orange-crowned Warbler, California Towhee, Lark Sparrow, Golden-crowned Sparrow, Lesser Goldfinch, and Lawrence's Goldfinch. Fr. 4 Apr 03 - Migrant Corner Trail (6:20am-7:35am, c. 1.25 miles): Wood Duck, Mallard, California Quail, Mourning Dove, Anna's Hummingbird, Nuttall's Woodpecker, Downy Woodpecker, Black Phoebe, Common Raven, Tree Swallow, Violet-green Swallow, Northern Rough-winged Swallow, Cliff Swallow, Oak Titmouse, Bushtit, White-breasted Nuthatch, Rock Wren (3 prs.), House Wren, Bewick's Wren, Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Western Bluebird, American Robin, Northern Mockingbird, European Starling, Orange-crowned Warbler, Yellow-rumped Warbler, Song Sparrow, White-crowned Sparrow, Dark-eyed Junco, Red-winged Blackbird, Brewer's Blackbird, House Finch, Lesser Goldfinch, Lawrence's Goldfinch,...BOBA.

Fr. 4 Apr 03 - FOS migrant Orange-crowned Warbler (two very bright yellow Lutescens) were heard, then seen, along the Migrant Corner Trail. A small northbound movement of twelve (1,5, & 6 individuals) migrating Western Kingbirds and 150-200 swallows (predominantly Violet-green, several Tree & Cliff, and at least one Northern Rough-winged) was observed. Fr, 4 Apr 03 - Kern River Preserve FOS nesting season male Black-chinned Hummingbird was heard and seen coming to the Visitor Center window mount feeders at the Preserve. BOBA.

Fr, 4 Apr 03 - Pine Siskin, Lesser Goldfinch, Lawrence's Goldfinch, and American Goldfinch are all present in the yard at Kern River Preserve Headquarters in Weldon. Based on past years, all four will remain into early May at which point the Pine Siskins will depart. BOBA.

Th, 3 Apr 03 - A male Rufous Hummingbird was at the feeders at Kern River Preserve Headquarters in Weldon.

Th, 3 Apr 03 - FOS nesting species male and female Common Yellowthroat were observed at Kern River Preserve Headquarters in Weldon. The male was heard singing from the marsh directly in front of KRP Hdqrtrs. and the female was seen and heard calling from the low willows bordering the parking lot. BOBA.

Th, 3 Apr 03 - FOS migrant & nesting species male Black-headed Grosbeak was observed singing and calling from the trees directly in front of Kern River Preserve Headquarters in Weldon. BOBA.

Su, 30 Mar 03 - FOS nesting species Yellow Warblers (two males) were observed singing and calling on known territories from the trees directly in front of Kern River Preserve Headquarters in Weldon. RETO.

Su, 30 Mar 03 - Migrant Corner Trail, Wet & Dry Meadow, and Desert Scrub. 7am-7:55am quick observations made while conducting trail maintenance scouting trip of 1.25-1.5 miles in length: Wood Duck, Mallard, Red-tailed Hawk, American Kestrel, California Quail, Mourning Dove, Nuttall's Woodpecker, Northern Flicker, Black Phoebe, Common Raven, Rock Wren, Bewick's Wren, House Wren, Ruby-crowned Kinglet, American Robin, Northern Mockingbird (in native desert habitat), European Starling, Yellow-rumped Warbler, California Towhee, Lark Sparrow, White-crowned Sparrow, House Finch (in native desert habitat), and Lawrence's Goldfinch. Sa, 29 Mar 03 - 75-100 American White Pelicans have been present on sandbars at the east end of Isabelle Reservoir in the Sequoia National Forest's South Fork Wildlife Area. BOBA.

Sa, 22 Mar 03 - FOS nesting species Western Kingbird on fence wire along entrance road to Sequoia National Forest's Greenhorn Ranger District Office between the two Isabella Reservoir Dams off of Hwy. 155. BOBA, MAWH.

Tu, 11 Mar 03 - FOS nesting species Costa's Hummingbird arrived at a feeder at a private residence off Kelso Valley Road ten miles south of Hwy. 178 and Kern River Preserve Headquarters. DELA, BRGA.

Th, 13 Mar 03 - At least twenty-seven Band-tailed Pigeons returned to a private residence in Mountain Mesa. Consistently present in this yard are California Quail, Nuttall's Woodpecker, Acorn Woodpecker, Western Scrub Jay, Oak Titmouse, and Spotted Towhee. ALSH.

Mo, 10 Mar 03 - FOS nesting species Hooded Oriole (1st yr. male) was at feeders at a private residence off Kelso Valley Road ten miles south of Hwy. 178 and Kern River Preserve Headquarters. DELA, BRGA.
