Fr, Nov 10 - Two Mountain Chickadees were present in the yard at Kern River Preserve Headquarters this morning. Several irruptive species have put in one or more appearances in the Kern River Valley this fall including Lewis' Woodpecker (DL, JS), Pinyon Jay (BB), Clark's Nutcracker (DL), Cassin's Finch (DL), and Pine Siskin (BB). BB. Th, Nov 9 - Two Mountain Bluebirds were present in the pasture bordering the entrance road to the Kern River Preserve. MW. We, Nov 8 - A Lapland Longspur and a Chestnut-collared Longspur were found at the China Lake NWC ponds. SS. We, Nov 1 - Birds observed from the Kern River Preserve Headquarters lawn area and on a three mile walk along the Headquarters area trail system of the Kern River Preserve (6:45am-7:50am) - Red-shouldered Hawk, Great Horned Owl, Nuttall's Woodpecker, Northern (Red-shafted) Flicker, Common Raven, Oak Titmouse, Bushtit, Bewick's Wren, Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Western Bluebird, American Robin, European Starling, Yellow-rumped (Audubon's) Warbler, Lark Sparrow, Song Sparrow, White-crowned Sparrow, Dark-eyed Junco, and House Finch. Su-Mo, Oct 15-23 - A first year male Rose-breasted Grosbeak was at a private residence in the settlement of Cane Brake about five miles east of the community of Onyx. This individual and the female reported Oct. 11-15 were both present on October 15th. DL & BG. Mo, Oct 16 - A Mountain Lion was observed in the vicinity of the Bird Banding Station near Nature Trail Signpost 13 at the Kern River Preserve. Observer unknown. DL. Sa, Sep 30 - Three Evening Grosbeaks were observed coming to a feeder at a private residence in the settlement of Cane Brake east of the community of Onyx. DL. Sa, Sep 30 - A Summer Tanager was observed along Fay Ranch Road at the South Fork Kern River. Observer undetermined. Sa, Sep 30 - A Lewis's Woodpecker was observed off Fay Ranch Road c. 0.5 miles north of the South Fork Kern River. Observer undetermined. Mo, Sep 25 - 5677 Turkey Vultures counted over the official Kern River Valley Vulture Count site were the highest one-day total in the seven year history of the count (Started in 1994). Su, Sep 24 - 600 Pinyon Jays in two flocks (500 just west of Walker Pass & 100 just east of Walker Pass) is the largest number among the many sightings reported from the area around Walker Pass over the last two weeks. DL. Su, Sep 24 - A Red Phalarope, a juv. & an adult Sabine's Gull, and two Common Terns were present at the China Lake NWC ponds. SS. Sa, Sep 23 - Clark's Nutcrackers appear to be on the move this fall. The latest report is of an individual seen over Hwy. 178 between the Cane Brake Ecological Reserve and Capp Canyon east of the community of Onyx. DL. Sa, Sep 23 - A Red Phalarope and a juv. Th, Sep 21 - A bright Prothonotary Warbler was reported from California City in the area around the bridge near the golf course and abandoned hotel. A Northern Waterthrush was also present. PM. Fr, Sep 8 - An adult female Summer Tanager continues to investigate the grape arbor at Kern River Preserve Headquarters, Weldon. BB. Fr, Sep 8 - An adult male Rufous Hummingbird spent it's second day in the company of a handful of Black-chinned Hummingbirds, several Anna's Hummingbirds, and numerous Selasphorus Hummingbird females and immature individuals at the Southern Sierra Research Center on Fay Ranch Road, Weldon. PM. Fr, Sep 8 - Birds observed from the Kern River Preserve Headquarters lawn area for this day/date included: Red-shouldered Hawk, Anna's Hummingbird, Rufous Hummingbird, Black Phoebe, Cedar Waxwing (first noted on an unrecorded day earlier this week), Summer Tanager, Brewer's Blackbird, and Lesser Goldfinch. Th, Sep 7 - A Connecticut Warbler was photographed and observed from 10am-11am (KG) and 4pm-5pm (MS, TW) at Galileo Hill Park/Silver Saddle Resort twelve miles northeast of California City, eastern Kern County. Also present were a Red-eyed Vireo, Black-and-white Warbler, American Redstart, and Summer Tanager, KG. Th, Sep 7 - Western Kingbirds are still present and/or passing through as an individual was observed along Fay Ranch Road, Weldon. PM. We, Sep 6 - A migrating (not present on Sep 7) immature White-crowned Sparrow in the settlement of Cane Brake east of the community of Onyx was the first reported this fall away from breeding grounds. Mo, Sep 4 - Birds observed from the Kern River Preserve Headquarters lawn area for this day/date included: Killdeer, Great Horned Owl, Oak Titmouse, European Starling, Black-headed Grosbeak, Blue Grosbeak (female), and Lazuli Bunting (female). Su, Sep 3 - An adult Zone-tailed Hawk was observed this morning c. 9:30am along the South Fork Kern River riverbed northwest of Kern River Preserve Headquarters and upstream from the Sierra Way Bridge. This individual was seen at 70'-100' perched with two Turkey Vultures in a snag beside the riverbed, then circling overhead for 3-4 minutes before heading south towards Weldon. Some tail feathers were missing. PM. Editor's Note: This is the fourth report of this species this year (See April 1, April 28, and May 25 in the Spring 2000 report.). Su, Sep 3 - Lawrence's Goldfinches were reported for the first time since July. They were observed this morning along the South Fork Kern River riverbed northwest of Kern River Preserve Headquarters and upstream from the Sierra Way Bridge. Their appearance coincided with the return of water to the riverbed. PM. Su, Sep 3 - Summer and Western Tanagers continue to be seen in the vicinity of the grape arbor at Kern River Preserve Headquarters. BB. Sa, Sep 2 - A molting adult male Costa's Hummingbird, two adult male and one female Black-chinned Hummingbirds, several Anna's Hummingbirds, and numerous Rufous Hummingbirds came to feeders this evening at the Southern Sierra Research Center on Fay Ranch Road. PM. Sa, Sep 2 - A Yellow-breasted Chat was present in the South Fork Kern River river bottom of the Kern River Preserve. PM. Su, Aug 27 - An Allen's Hummingbird was identified (gestalt, size, tail feather width & pattern) at close range among the Black-chinned Hummingbirds, Anna's Hummingbirds, and Rufous Hummingbirds present at the front yard feeders of the Kern River Preserve. PM. Su, Aug 27 - A Yellow-breasted Chat was heard and observed in the South Fork Kern River river bottom of the Kern River Preserve. PM. Sa, Aug 26 - The Yellow-billed Cuckoo, Mountain Chickadee, and Summer Tanager that apparently summered at Galileo Hill Park were still present. Also present were a female Acorn Woodpecker and at least fourteen western neotropical migrant species. DT, JW, TW. Sa, Aug 26 - An adult male Rufous Hummingbird was observed among the hundreds of hummingbirds visiting feeders at Kern River Preserve Headquarters including a few Black-chinned, several Anna's, and hundreds of non-adult male Rufous. Tu, Aug 22 - A White-winged Dove was reported by Denise LaBerteaux at 8:30am from a private residence in the settlement of Cane Brake about five miles east of the community of Onyx for a Second Kern River Valley Record. This bird was subsequently seen mid to late afternoon by several observers. DL & BG in the a.m..; BB, BG, EK, DL, PM, & BM in the p.m. Tu, Aug 22 - A Yellow-billed Cuckoo was still present and calling about 200 meters west of Prince's Pond, Kern River Preserve. PM. Sa, Aug 19 - Two Black-throated Gray Warblers and 20-30 Wilson's Warblers were observed foraging north of the north side of Prince's Pond. A singing male Summer Tanager was also present. PM. Sa, Aug 19 - A Yellow-billed Cuckoo was seen silently foraging in the sandbar willow patch bordering the west edge of the Kern River Preserve Headquarters' parking lot. BB. Fr., Aug 18 - Turkey Vultures continue to build in numbers with two kettles of over 100 individuals observed off Fay Ranch Road at the base of Fay Canyon. PM. Fr, Aug 18 - Birds observed from the Kern River Preserve Headquarters lawn area for this day/date included: Great Horned-Owl and Lark Sparrow. BB. Th, Aug 17 - Birds observed from the Kern River Preserve Headquarters lawn area for this day/date included: Northern Harrier, Willow Flycatcher, Bushtit, White-breasted Nuthatch, Summer Tanager, and Red-winged Blackbird. BB. We, Aug 16 - Birds observed from the Kern River Preserve Headquarters lawn area for this day/date included: California Towhee. BB. Tu, Aug 15 - A Yellow-billed Cuckoo was heard "cueing" and "kalping" from the yard at Kern River Preserve Headquarters throughout the day. This species has been heard and/or seen in the vicinity of Headquarters almost daily for the last several weeks. BB. Tu, Aug 15 - A Swainson's Hawk over Fay Ranch Road was reported. PM. Tu, Aug 15 - Kettles of 30+ Turkey Vultures have been forming over the last week. A group of 100+ was reported this date at the base of Fay Canyon. PM. Tu, Aug 15 - There was a migratory movement of MacGillivray's Warblers, Wilson's Warbler's, and Western Tanagers at the Kern River Preserve's Prince's Pond area. PM Tu, Aug 15 - Birds observed from the Kern River Preserve Headquarters lawn area for this day/date included: Mallard. BB. Mo, Aug 14 - The grapes hanging from the arbor bordering the courtyard at Kern River Preserve Headquarters continue to be attractive for feeding birds including Nuttall's Woodpecker, American Robin, Summer Tanager, Western Tanager, Black-headed Grosbeak, and House Finch. BB. Su, Aug 13 - A male and female Summer Tanager were heard calling and seen in the Kern River Preserve Headquarters' courtyard. They have been seen and/or almost heard daily since mature grapes appeared on the vines of the grape arbor in July. BB. Su, Aug 13 - Birds observed from the Kern River Preserve Headquarters lawn area for this day/date included: Allen's Hummingbird, Western Wood-Pewee, Ash-throated Flycatcher, Blue Grosbeak, and Bullock's Oriole. BB. Sa, Aug 12 - Birds observed from the Kern River Preserve Headquarters lawn area for this day/date included: Turkey Vulture and Western Kingbird.. BB. Fr, Aug 11 - An adult female Anna's Hummingbird banded at the Southern Sierra Research Station on Fay Ranch Road was the 1000th hummingbird banded during the Kern River Valley Year 2000 field season. Fr, Aug 11 - For several minutes around 10:45am, two Yellow-billed Cuckoos were heard "counter-singing" a rapid "kalp" series from trees in the Slough Channel just across the ranch road from the Birders' Board on the front lawn at Kern River Preserve Headquarters. BB. We, Aug 9 - Six species of hummingbirds were banded during a morning banding session at a private residence at the base of Fay Canyon off of Fay Ranch Road: Black-chinned, Anna's, Costa's, Calliope, Rufous, and Allen's. This is the first time this banding season that six species of hummers have been banded at the same location. DMi. We, Aug 9 - A Yellow-billed Cuckoo was reported from the area near the west end of Prince's Pond. PM. Tu, Aug 8 - Two Willow Flycatchers, a Red-eyed Vireo, and two Western Tanagers were in the same tree alongside the parking lot of the South Fork Wildlife Area (north side) off Sierra Way. PM.
